2026 1991 Wrestling

John Marchette established himself as one of the most accomplished wrestlers in the history of Hoover High School Wrestling. A lifelong wrestler who first stepped onto the mat at age five, Marchette capped an outstanding Hoover career in 1991 by capturing the Ohio State Championship at 125 pounds. His championship followed a fourth-place state finish in 1990, demonstrating his rise to the top of one of Ohio's most competitive wrestling weight classes. He also earned recognition on the national stage, finishing as a high school national runner-up.

Marchette's relentless style became his trademark. Prior to the 1991 state tournament, the prestigious Brinkman Report projected him as the favorite to win the 125-pound title, describing the Hoover senior as a "non-stop" wrestler who competed at a frenetic pace, combining tremendous strength with exceptional takedown ability. His toughness, conditioning, and aggressive approach embodied the qualities that have long defined the Hoover Wrestling program.

Following his graduation from Hoover in 1991, Marchette received a full athletic scholarship to the University of Minnesota. His wrestling journey would ultimately lead him to Augsburg College, where, at age 29, he remarkably became an NCAA Division III National Champion and two-time All-American. From an Ohio state championship at Hoover to eventually standing atop the podium as an NCAA champion, Marchette's perseverance and accomplishments have left a lasting legacy within the proud tradition of Hoover Wrestling and earned him his place in the Hoover High School Athletic Hall of Fame.
