William graduated from Ithaca High School in 1963. He played varsity football for three seasons, varsity basketball for two seasons, and varsity baseball for one season.

For football, he was named team captain and MVP in 1962. He was 1st Team All-STAC and recipient of the first ever Joe Spano Award winner for leadership and team spirit.

He accepted a football scholarship to Penn State. He later transferred to Ithaca College where he was the starting left tackle for their undefeated team. Bill finished his career by playing semi-pro for the Richmond Rebels in 1966.
