Ed Smith played football, basketball, and baseball, graduating in 1927. At Cornell he was a running back on the football team and was captain of the 1933 baseball team, and after graduation was a minor league baseball player. He assisted Eddie Pierce in coaching the 1933 football team that traveled to Lakeland, Florida, to play a charity football game that ended in a 7-7 tie.
