Al Marion was a standout wrestler for Ithaca High School in the 1950's. In 1956 and 1957 Al was a Section IV Champion. In 1957, he was named Outstanding Wrestler in Section IV, and he was a recipient of the Gordon Pritchard Memorial Scholarship as well as the Roger Van Etten memorial trophy.

Al went on to wrestle at Cornell, where he was named most valuable wrestler and Eastern Intercollegiate Champion. He also captained the Cornell Wrestling team from 1960-1961, and received NCAA All-American Honorable Mention in 1961.
