George Dentes was both an outstanding participant and lifelong supporter of Ithaca High School athletics. As a player, he was a standout in two sports — football and baseball. As a captain of the football team his senior year, he led the LR Red to an undefeated season and a #1 ranking in New York State. He was also voted an All-State Linebacker that year. In the spring of his senior year, he was again voted a captain only it was on the baseball team. That year he was named the All-Conference Catcher.

After graduating 5th in his class of 588, George attended Cornell University's College of Engineering where he was a Cornell National Scholar, a recipient of the Arrington Memorial Scholarship and the McMullen Engineering Scholarship. He was a captain of both the freshmen football and freshman baseball teams. After playing varsity football and baseball for one year, he joined the Sprint football team as a senior. Later he secured his J.D. from Cornell Law School, graduating cum laude.

In addition to his longtime job as Tompkins County District Attorney, George supported athletics in the community by serving as treasurer and coach of the Ithaca Babe Ruth League. He also was a Kiwanis baseball coach and Small Fry football coach. He was constantly videotaping Ithaca High School sports — creating highlight videos for his and their teammates.

George Dentes was a tireless and enthusiastic supporter of Ithaca High School sports who continually worked to honor past coaches and fund-raiser for the football, wrestling and baseball teams. His imprint as an outstanding player, coach and zealous booster of Ithaca High School athletics will be felt for years to come.
