During Steve's time at Ithaca High School, Steve was an outstanding athlete in both basketball and baseball. In basketball, Steve was a three year starter, and Captain his senior year. In his junior year, he was a member of the team that won the Section IV Basketball Championship. In his senior year, his team was runners-up, losing in the championship game. Steve was named to the All-STAC team, and held the record at the time for most points scored in a game, 35.

In baseball, Steve was considered by his coach, Joe Moresco, to be the greatest left-handed pitcher he had ever seen. Steve was twice named to the All-STAC team and pitched his teams to STAC Championships in 1959 and again in 1960 his senior year.

During his career, Steve once pitched four consecutive one-hitters in a row. Steve's combined record for three years was 18 wins and only 3 losses. Steve accepted a Division I scholarship in baseball to Rutgers University and in 1962 signed a professional baseball contract with the Chicago White Sox, where he played three years in their system.
