Jim Upper earned 8 varsity letters in football, basketball, and baseball. He was a two-way starter on the undefeated 1953 football team. He was captain of the basketball team, high scorer, and all-STAC. In baseball, he was all-STAC in both his junior and senior years as a pitcher, and was captain of the 1955 team. He continued to play 3 sports at Hobart college, where he won the football team's most valuable player award, was captain, high scorer, and most valuable player on the basketball team, and was captain and most valuable player on the baseball team. After graduation, he coached at Hobart for 14 years, becoming head coach of the basketball and baseball teams.
