Richard played basketball from 1943 to 1945. He was a captain and the team's leading scorer in 1944 and 1945. Herson played freshman basketball at Cornell prior to entering the Army. He was offered a tryout by the Rochester Royals of the NBA, he chose graduate school over basketball.
