Tom Hartshorne

Tom Hartshorne led the Ithaca High cross country team to consecutive State championships in '70 and '71, and placed 5th individually in the Eastern States championships. In track, he set IHS school records for the mile (4:19) and two mile (9:28). He was in the top one percent of his class academically and was president of the Ithaca High student council. He attended Princeton University and ran barefoot for the thinclads, helping the team to its first ever Heptagonal Cross Country Championship and to a silver medal in the IC4A's.

He graduated in '76 with a bachelor's in architecture (magna cum laude), then obtained a master's in '83 from MIT. Tom continued to compete in later years. His numerous achievements as a master's athlete include personal bests of 0:53 for 400 meters, 2:01 for 800 meters, 4:11 for 1500 meters, 4:23 in the 5th Avenue Mile, and 17:09 in the 5 kilometer cross country at Van Cortlandt Park.

He was the USATF National Masters Indoor 800 meter champion in 1997 and was a member of the Central Park Track Club's 4x800 meter relay team, which won championships at the Penn Relays outdoors twice and at the Millrose Games in Madison Square Garden twice. He was a semi-finalist at the world Masters Outdoor Track Championships in '95 and '99 in the 800 and 1500 meters.
