Rich Bernstein is recognized for his long tenure as a coach of boys and girls track & field and cross-country. He coached for 3 years in Massachusetts and Upstate New York, then began at Ithaca High in 1982. He became the head coach of boys and girls cross-country in 1987.

His teams have amassed 28 division titles, 27 STAC overall titles, and 20 Section IV titles. The boys have won an unprecedented 11 consecutive Section IV titles. The girls' dual meet record over these years is 66 wins and 3 losses, while the boys' team was honored as one of the top 10 teams of the decade (1990's) by the New York State Coaches' Committee for excellence at the State and Federation level.

In track & field, the girls' team has won 14 STAC division titles, 12 STAC overall titles, and 11 Class A titles. He has coached 4 State champions and numerous medalists. Rich served as a Central team coach in the Empire State Games in 1986-1988.
