Bruce was a three sport athlete who excelled at Gymnastics but also lettered in Varsity Football and Track & Field before graduating in 1970.

He was a member of the IHS Varsity Gymnastics team for four years and was named its Captain and Most Valuable Gymnast in his senior year. He led the team during its "golden era" when it won 23 consecutive dual meets and six consecutive Section IV Titles. During his senior year, Bruce was undefeated in meet competition on the still rings & vaulting and was Section IV Champion in three events: parallel bars, still rings and all-around competition.

Former IHS Gymnastics coach Darryl Waterman called him a "coach's dream" because of his leadership, hard work and willingness to work with younger gymnasts.
