Dan Mackesey was outstanding in three sports at Ithaca high. In soccer, he won 4 varsity letters and was team captain, defensive MVP, and all-STAC. He was a starting member of the hockey team for 2 years. And in lacrosse, he won 3 varsity letters and was team captain and MVP as a senior.

Dan continued to excel at Cornell, where he was twice a 1st team all-American in lacrosse, playing goalie on 2 national championship teams, and serving as captain his senior year. In soccer, he was team captain, team MVP, and a 1st team all-Ivy selection. As a senior, Dan was named Cornell Daily Sun Athlete of the Year, and was recognized by the NCAA as one of the top 5 student-athletes in the nation. He was inducted into the Cornell Athletics Hall of Fame in 1983.
