During Mike's time at Ithaca High School, he was an outstanding athlete in hockey, baseball, and golf. In his sophomore year, he was a member of the New York State Champion Hockey team, and he was a 1st team all-league player in golf. In his junior year, Mike was named to the 1st team All-Stars in baseball, and he was a leading scorer as well as a 1st team All-Star player in the Central New York Hockey League. He was also selected as male athlete of the Year by The Ithaca Journal, and he was a member of the STAC Champion golf team.

Additionally, he played hockey in the Empire State Games in 1984 and 1985. As a senior, Mike captained all 3 of his sports teams. His team won the Central New York Championship game in hockey and the STAC Championship in golf. Mike went on to play hockey for Cornell from 1986-1989.
