John Duthie was captain and MVP of three IHS varsity teams — football, hockey, and lacrosse. His hockey team won the New York State championship in 1987, with John scoring the winning goal and earning all-State honors.

He quarterbacked the football team, which put together a six-game unbeaten string, including a 31-31 tie with Binghamton, then ranked first in the State. He was a STAC all-star selection in football and lacrosse.

He attended the United States Naval Academy, started on the varsity lacrosse team for four years, and in his senior year was captain, MVP, and all-american.
