Roy Staley

Inducted January 26, 2007

Roy was a two-sport athlete at Ithaca High School in the early 60's where he was a member of the golf team and mens swim team. He was a Sectional Champion in both the 100-yard butterfly and 200-yard intermediate medley. Roy placed 6th at the State meet in the 100 butterfly. After graduation, Roy swam at the University of North Carolina for four years.

Roy has coached both the men's and women's swim programs here at Ithaca High School. He coached the men's team from 1969-1976 and again from 1986-2004 where they won numerous Sectional titles.

Since 1988, Roy has been our head women's swim coach. His teams have won an unprecedented 18 straight Sectional titles and have only lost one dual meet since 1988. Roy's team has been recognized as the top swim program in New York State four times in 1993, 1994, 2005 and 2006 at the New York State Swim Championships. He has had 25 swimmers recognized as All-Americans and 55 swimmers recognized as Academic All-Americans.

As of November 7, 2006, at Section IV women's swim records, except for diving, are held by an Ithaca High swimmer. Our women swimmers hold four State records in the 200 medley relay, 400 free relay and 100 breaststroke.

Roy was recognized by the Ithaca Journal in 2005 as the Kenny VanSickle Male Coach of the Year.
