Shane was a four-year starter in wrestling at Ithaca High School. He was named All-STAC all four years and STAC Champion two years. He was Section IV and State Champion in 1991 and a Section IV Finalist three years in a row. He was named High School All-American in 1993 where he placed fifth at Nationals.

Shane was the only IHS wrestler to All-America at High School Nationals, as the tournament began in 1990. He is sixth on the All-Time Win List at IHS with 130 wins, 11 losses, and 5 ties.

Shane went on to the University of Maryland to continue his career in wrestling, where he was a three-time NCAA Qualifier and ranked in the nation's Top Ten in '97-'98.
