Gary lettered four years in both Football and Wrestling before graduating from IHS in 1970. He was voted Co-Captain by his teammates for both sports during his senior year.

In Football, Gary earned 1st Team All STAC honors ('68 & '69), was voted 1st Team All Central NY ('68 & '69) and was voted 1st Team All New York State ('68 & '69). As a senior, he helped his team win the STAC Championship and a #1 ranking in NY State. That same year he was named a 2nd Team High School All American.

In wrestling, Gary was voted 1st Team All STAC twice in '69 & '70. During his junior year, he won a record 12 straight matches to assist his team to a winning record.

After college, Gary stayed involved in Ithaca High School athletics by coaching Varsity Baseball (2002-2007) and also as an Assistant Football Coach (2002-2012).
